Application procedure: students with a D-type visa
As you probably already know, once you arrive in Hungary, you must get your residence permit as soon as possible. It is a crucial step as you can only stay and study in Hungary if you have one. There is a strict deadline for doing so: you are obliged to have it within 30 days of crossing the borders of the Schengen Area; otherwise, you might get expelled from within its borders. However, please do not be alarmed if you miss this deadline. There have been recent delays in the process due to various factors, such as the Immigration Office sending the residence permit to the university later than expected, or minor errors occurring during the application process on their end. Kindly await the notification from the university; they will send you an email as soon as they receive your residence permit.
The residence permit is also necessary for many other official steps, such as applying for a TAJ card.
Important Note: You are no longer required to apply for a Residence Permit at the Immigration Office, as this process has already been completed at the Consulate during your visa application. You can pick up your Residence Permit at the university once it is ready.
About the method of collection: You will receive your Residence Permit from the university at the ASC (Academic Services Centre – formally CAO). You will be informed in advance by e-mail of the possible date of collection. We urge you to promptly pick up your permit upon receiving this notification. After you picked up your Residence Permit, you have to apply for an Addess Card. Here you can find how you can do it.
The Residence Permit and the Address Card are also necessary for many other official steps, such as applying for a TAJ card.
Should you have any questions about the residence permit application, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us at imt.documents@bme.hu!
Application procedure: students without a D-type visa (ie. students from most Latin American and Balkan countries, as well as Moldova and Ukraine)
